Waypoint & Intact Donate to Backpack Buddies

Waypoint Insurance is proud to partner with Intact Insurance, Better Communities Program, to help support Backpack Buddies – Food4Thought project with a donation of $5,000.

Growing children require regularly available food, but many B.C. families struggle to put food on the table every day. Backpack Buddies help fill the weekend hunger gap – a time when children go without the support of school breakfast and lunch programs – by providing meals and snacks for the weekend directly to those who need them.They recognize that a child who receives a bag of food from Backpack Buddies may not get anything else to eat all weekend, so our priority is to ensure the bags of food help our kids get through the weekend without going hungry. At just $20, a bag of food contains meals, plus fresh fruit, veggies and healthy snacks so that a child has enough to eat over the weekend plus a couple extra meals for the week ahead.

The Backpack Buddies program is coordinated through teachers, administrators and social workers who advise us on the needs of their students and help identify the children who could benefit most from receiving a bag of food for the weekend. Backpack Buddies trucks drive through Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island delivering bags of food to Recipient Schools on Friday morning. The deliveries are met by school administrators who take them to the school counsellor’s office or another location for discrete and confidential distribution to students as they leave for home Friday afternoon.

Backpack Buddies is mindful that children receiving support never feel singled out and that no one is made to feel like there’s something wrong or abnormal about their family’s circumstances. Currently, Backpack Buddies serve children in 21 communities across BC.  Last year, with the support of generous donors, a committed community and our distribution partners, Backpack Buddies delivered 127,225 bags of food to children across British Columbia who would otherwise not have eaten on the weekend.

The Better Communities Program gives brokers and Intact the opportunity to work together and support local initiatives that help create resilient communities. Operating since 2018, the program has contributed more than a million dollars to charitable organizations and community initiatives important to brokers.
