Advisor, Personal Marine Insurance

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Advisor, Personal Marine Insurance is responsible for managing and renewing a portfolio of personal marine insurance policies, delivering expert advice and exceptional service to boat and yacht owners. This role is fully specialized in personal marine insurance only, focused exclusively on servicing boat and yacht owners, and includes responsibility for annual travel medical insurance renewals as part of the advisor’s service portfolio.

The Advisor drives retention and revenue growth through proactive renewal management, accurate risk assessment, strong market knowledge, and consistent application of marine underwriting standards.

This is a hybrid role with the flexibility to work in-office or in-branch based on the needs of the role and/or as required be management. Preference will be given to candidates that can work in-office in Vancouver or Victoria.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Sales & Portfolio Management


  • Manage and maintain a portfolio of personal marine insurance renewal accounts, ensuring policies in force (PIF) and retention targets are achieved or exceeded.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of the Canadian personal marine insurance market, including insurer appetites, coverage options, and emerging risks.
  • Assess and analyze marine-specific risk factors such as vessel type, usage, navigation limits, moorage, cruising grounds, claims history, and client experience.
  • Identify appropriate coverage solutions for pleasure craft, yachts, and related personal marine risks.

Customer Experience

  • Lead the renewal process by reviewing existing marine policies and providing clear, tailored recommendations to meet each client’s boating and travel needs.
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of product terms and conditions, including coverages, limits, and exclusions, to minimize errors and omissions.
  • Ensure accurate maintenance of customer information and insurance policy details within relevant systems.
  • Process endorsements, cancellations, and adjustments for insurance policies and additional products/services.

    Utilize active listening and investigative skills to resolve potential challenges with policy renewals.

    Identify customer needs, coverage gaps, and cross-selling opportunities to enhance customer protection.
  • Issue renewal documents, endorsements, and cancellations for insurance policies and additional products/services.
  • Manage payment processing and diligently follows up on outstanding payments.
  • Maintain stringent processing standards, ensuring data accuracy, confidentiality, and timeliness.
  • Develop and sustain a comprehensive understanding of insurance manuals, best practices, standards, policies, and systems.
  • Handle non-complex customer requests efficiently, such as issuing policy copies, providing receipts for payments, and processing payment-related inquiries.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders, addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and offering tailored insurance solutions.
  • Execute renewal market assessments according to Navacord’s policies and customer-specific requirements.

Operational Excellence

  • Ensure accurate and timely data entry and maintenance of client and policy records in brokerage management systems (e.g., EPIC, Insurer Portals).
  • Adhere to all brokerage procedures, marine underwriting guidelines, and regulatory requirements to minimize errors and omissions.
  • Conduct renewal market reviews in alignment with internal policies and client-specific needs.
  • Collaborate with underwriting partners and internal teams to resolve marine placement, coverage, or documentation issues.
  • Participate in ongoing training to maintain and strengthen marine insurance knowledge and technical expertise.
  • Support departmental initiatives and process improvements focused on efficiency, quality, and client experience.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Level 1 Insurance License required (or ability to obtain); or Level 2 (asset).
  • Minimum 1 year of insurance advisory experience, with marine insurance experience.
  • Strong knowledge of marine insurance policy wordings, risk assessment, and underwriting considerations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex marine concepts in clear, client-friendly language.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills to manage multiple renewals and priorities.
  • Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage a defined book of business.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, including the ability to de-escalate service issues.
  • Proficiency with brokerage management systems (e.g., EPIC) and Microsoft Office applications.

The salary range for this role is $45,000 to $70,000 per year. Compensation is determined by a combination of factors including a candidate’s experience, job-specific knowledge, and skills. Internal equity to ensure fairness across the organization and region/location is also considered.
